Keynote

Jake Kwaayisi Yawson is an aerospace engineer who is passionate about space education and innovation in Ghana. He holds a Bachelor's degree in Aerospace Engineering and a Master's degree in Project Management from Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology. At Xavier Space Solutions, Jake is the Projects Coordinator managing several projects, including the CanSat Ghana Elementary Campaign 2023 and now the SheSat Ghana Campaign 2025, which seeks to mentor and teach female university students coding, electronics, and space systems using the mission design of a CanSat. Co-currently, he is a Senior Safety Officer and Instructor at Pisces Aviation Limited dba PassionAir.

 

Jake is also an active member of the Space Generation Advisory Council (SGAC), currently serving as the National Point of Contact for Ghana, aiming to bridge the gaps between government, industry, and academia within the space ecosystem. He has also served in the organising teams of two Africa Space Generation Workshops (Af-SGW) in the capacity of communication team member for the 5th Af-SGW in Stellenbosch, South Africa, and Programme Team Lead for the 7th Af-SGW in Harare, Zimbabwe. Jake served as a Space Ambassador for Ghana at Space Is For You, where he wrote articles on space spinoffs and space-related activities in Ghana. Through his work and voluntary involvement, Jake Yawson is helping to inspire and educate the next generation of space professionals in Ghana and the world.

As Africa accelerates its space ambitions, Ernest Teye Matey stands at the forefront of shaping the future of satellite-driven space architecture, ensuring that the continent is an active participant in humanity’s expansion beyond Earth.

Keynote

Jake Yawson, identified knowledge gap in space science and technology. 

He believes the competition will equip students with practical knowledge and rekindles their interest to pursue space science-related courses. 

“We seek to do is to impact space science and astronomy amongst students to develop their understanding of engineering to facilitate STEM education in Ghana. We noticed that currently in our curriculum we are not getting exposed to some of these handy things.

“To sort of bring that light to the SHS level, we started this at the university level but we are seeing that to bring the zeal and enthusiasm to pursue some programs like this in the university, it is beneficial that we give them also the technical skill to be able to design some of these things on their own,” he said. 

Technical officer for CanSat Ghana, Eric Obeng indicated that the competition will facilitate the efforts to promote STEM among the youth. 

“The mission is to train the students on how to develop a miniature satellite. Students will be taught things like coding, electronics, space science, physics, mathematics, and all this. There is a movement to promote STEM in our country and as part of these activities, STEM will be promoted and the right applications.
